Integrated Voter Engagement

MV’s successful year-round voter engagement programming ensured that there is no loss of momentum between elections. At the beginning of 2022, MV worked with their partners to craft a shared core universe for voter engagement.

Throughout the year, each organization built upon this list. Through MV’s support, partners were able to register thousands of voters and have conversations with over 685,000 voters ahead of the November election by door knocking, phone banking, texting, and at community events. We also expanded language access, translating materials into Spanish, Arabic, and Bangla.

Voting Rights & Election Protection

In 2022, we executed a massive Voting Rights and Election Protection Program for both the August primary and the November general election. The program spanned 8 months, covered over 30 cities across the state, and included 40 partner organizations. Our partners recruited and placed over 580 volunteers statewide to cover over 500 polling locations and over 1,000 precincts.

Reproductive Justice

Seeing the writing on the wall with the rightward lurching of the Supreme Court, Michigan Voices, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, and the ACLU of Michigan formed the Michigan Reproductive Freedom for All coalition in 2021. We saw Proposal 3, which sought to codify abortion rights in Michigan, from beginning to end. Along with our partners, we collected hundreds of thousands of signatures in 2021 to get the measure on the ballot. In 2022 we educated voters and got out the vote. Proposal 3 passed with 57% of the vote.

Redistricting

In 2021, the Michigan Voices Democracy Department’s staff played an integral role in the redistricting process by closely monitoring the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission through their year-long map drawing process. Our Democracy Workgroup partners engaged with MICRC right up until they approved the final maps. On multiple occasions, the MICRC changed course and edited their maps in real time, directly impacted by our partners’ public comments.

Public Health

In 2021 Michigan Voices administered a $1 million grant from US Health Resources & Services Administration to six partners with the goal of reducing vaccine hesitancy and increasing vaccination rates.

The Voices for Vaccines program targeted Black, Brown, and Indigenous-dense communities with low vaccination rates who are medically underserved with the message that the COVID-19 vaccines are safe, effective, and free.
